Background

Jhilly was started by our founder, Rachel. Having lived in different cities, Rachel often relied on women’s social groups and events as a way to connect and truly immerse herself in each new place.

After moving back to her hometown in New Jersey, she experienced a sense of reverse culture shock. She had grown into a completely different person, with a broader perspective on female friendship and its importance. Returning home meant being far from friends across the world, outgrowing certain connections, and craving relationships with more depth.

Female connection is far more important than most people realize. Having a strong group of women around you, women who genuinely want to see you thrive, builds confidence and a powerful sense of self. That kind of support gives women the courage to chase their dreams, leave toxic relationships or situations, and feel truly loved. There’s something incredibly powerful about being chosen by a friend, someone who loves you not because they have to, but because they want to. It can completely shift your perspective on life.

Growing up in a difficult home environment, Rachel didn’t always have the tools or understanding to build the kind of deep, supportive female friendships she values today. For a long time, she was operating from a place of survival rather than connection. That began to change when she moved to London on her own. Experiencing deep isolation and loneliness was a turning point, but it was also transformative. The people who showed up for her during that time made her realize that we only truly get through life with the support of one another.

When she returned home, Rachel struggled to find those same kinds of meaningful connections. She tried Bumble BFF, random chats, and one-on-one friendships, but many didn’t develop into the deeper relationships she was seeking. With everything she had learned about herself, the intentional work she put into healing, and encouragement from friends, she had a simple idea: what if she created the kind of space she had been searching for?

With that support, she took the leap and created an Instagram account. Being from Jersey, she wanted to make sure the community wasn’t just for Philly girls, but for women across the entire area. That’s how “Jhilly” was born, a blend of Jersey and Philly.

The rest is history, and we are incredibly grateful for the love and passion that continues to grow this community.

“This group has helped me grow personally and professionally. If I didn’t have Jhilly, I would be burnt out, lacking passion and creativity. I am so grateful for the girls allowing me to express myself and do what I love. I also could never thank Jhilly enough for the friendships it has brought me. This group is home to some of the strongest and loving women I have ever met.” -Rachel Snyder (founder)
